A better title for this edition would be “How Many Things Are Wrong With This Picture?”

P.S.: I think the ball was photoshopped in after the fact.

Finally someone saw this! This picture (or one similar) is on Score Sport’s soccer website. It’s basically “buy our products if you want to leave your shirt untucked, not wear black socks and wear white tennis shoes”. My referee spidey sense just starts tingling every time I lookup Score’s soccer gear.

Regarding the assistant referee:
1) No referee socks
2) Wrong shoes
3) Untucked shirt
4) Whistle (or something else that shouldn’t be there) around the neck
5) Undershirt should be BLACK (or, if nothing else, yellow)
Regarding the players:
1) The player in green appears to be guilty of handling the ball
2) The player in green also appears to be wearing earrings
3) The player in black has illegal equipment holding up her shirt sleeves
4) (If this is HS) No numbers on the front of either player’s uniform.

I can almost make a 12 days of Christmas song with all that’s wrong with the players and if you call him an AR.

Nothing to report, i think he’s ready for a premier game

HaHa, Let’s start with the AR, White Shoes (a huge pet peeve of mine), short non referee socks, jersey untucked, hand shielding eyes and not even looking at the current play. Then the player appears to be about to handle the ball but that one is a little tougher to call from a still image.

Nothing is wrong with the picture. It is clear, well centered and in focus and it clearly shows why some people should not have anything to do with officiating at any level.

besides the untucked shirt of the AR, or the white shoes and socks?

I agree with Marshall J, but no one has noticed that the AR’s flag is in the wrong hand?

His flag is in the correct hand, the action is moving up the field and he is holding the flag in the hand closest to the field facing the center referee.

I disagree, the only time the flag should be in his right hand without making a call or about to make a call is if he is sprinting towards the centre of the field. If he is facing the field like he is in this picture, the flag needs to be in his left hand, closest to the referee in the middle.

If the flag were in his left hand it wouldn’t be closest to the referee in the middle…but I assume you meant if he were side-stepping like is recommended.
If he is walking up the field, then the flag would still need to be in his right hand.

I’m wondering what the AR is looking at. Doesn’t seem to be focused on the action.

Here’s my take on the photo: A sunny Saturday on an AYSO field. The Coordinator of Referees for this association had some no-shows. The young man shown in the photo was hanging around with his friends after he played in his match. The Center Referee, who was none-to-experienced himself, went looking for some lines-people. “Joe” said he would help, but he only had his team jersey (which was the same as the girl’s green team) to wear. The Center Referee gave Joe a spare shirt from the stockpile the Association kept. Joe was apprehensive, but he was interested to get in to refereeing, so he said, “Yes”. The spectators and players were pleased that the game could go on as planned. Joe ended up enjoying the experience. He took a referee class, purchased jerseys, shorts, socks, shoes, and the unlimited number of accessories sold for soccer officials. He became a Grade 8 Official, moved on to “Club” matches, then High School matches, then College matches. Joe, with the proper instruction, became the most highly-regarded soccer official in the Southern California area. He now helps prospective youth referees at his local AYSO. I say, “Good for Joe, for taking that first step to become a referee!”

It is obvious! AR has his shirt un-tucked, White socks and white shoes, and flag in wrong hand. Ok, about the player, her arms are in a natural running position, and if the ball played of her arm the ruling is, No handling. I might not agree with that interpretation of the laws of the game, but I do make the calls according to the interpretation. I have been refereeing for 8 years, over 2000 centers, mostly youth premier, and love refereeing.

As an Assignor, I agree with Christopher…it happens. I know that’s the case because the AR is doing a great job hiding his true identity with his hand. 😉
However, I’ve seen worse than this on regularly-assigned games at away games. In too many cases, the competence matches the appearance.

In addition to all the other points, I would have asked the home team change into lighter jerseys.

They’re playing the game with a size 9 ball.

Great thought Mr. Christopher Reay. You have a positive mind and mentorship. You are the great resource for AYSO. Hope to meet you in soccer pitch, some day. Cheers.
